The Twelve Kingdoms Commentary The Twelve Kingdoms is one of those animations that when I looked at the cover box, I was immediately turned off. However, by chance I was given a view age of the first 12 episodes and that sparked off my interest and which later sprung out as this website. I can't really compare The Twelve Kingdoms with any other animation because not a lot of animations have this serious theme. It is not really fantasy as many of the creatures we see are actually those from the myths of ancient china. If I must compare, I would place two other animations for reference and that would be "Record of Lodoss Wars" and "Romance of the Three Kingdoms". I would say it had both of them in it. The fantasy and mythological elements in "Record of Lodoss Wars" with a mix of that ancient flavour that I can't really describe in "Romance of the three Kingdoms." For all those who are not familiar with the myths and legends of China, we also have a creature called Kirins ( Qilin ), but of course they look no where like how it looked like in the Twelve Kingdoms. As for that unexplainable flavour, it would be when Naotaka sacrificed himself to save his people or when Ribi gave up her life so Enki can escape. That kind of motivating words, speeches and actions that could moves armies or at least make you move a tear to a grown man's heart is quite unexplainable. Like the time when Liu Bei in the "Romance of the Three Kingdoms" refusing to abandon his people and insisted to bring his whole state with him as he fled from an invasion. You would really have to see it for yourself to get what I mean fully. After watching it twice, what I have to sum up is that this is a very serious animation which portrays many life experiences that would be able to teach us to be better selves and not just a cartoon. Of course I understand that some kiddish animes do also teach and show use values like friendship, loyalty and righteousness. But it takes animations like The Twelve Kingdoms to really have that touch the inner core of my soul. |
